WHAT TO EXPECT
After an initial phone conversation, I will email parent and student questionnaires, which will be filled out and returned to me via email or brought to the consultation. The parents, student and I will have a consultation at a mutually agreeable time and place (usually at the student’s home). The cost of the consultation is $300; it usually lasts about two hours, during which we will discuss the information in the packet that I will provide for each person.
Test Prep for the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GED
Besides a high-grade point average, the test score is the other most important component examined by college admissions officers to determine if a student is accepted. Many students have good grades, get good teacher recommendations, have participated in many extracurricular activities, have leadership positions, and have over 100 hours of community service but do not have high test scores.
Students will email me a rough draft of each essay, which I will edit by making suggestions concerning content, organization, wording, grammar and spelling. For most students this includes the following:
-The 650-word essay for the Common App
-The 400-word essay for the Coalition
-The 2-5 supplementary essays required by top colleges
-All the answers to the Common App questions
-The student’s resume
Student Planning Sessions
We will set up a 30-minute planning session each month until the summer before the senior year when the student and I will have weekly planning sessions. We will set goals of what needs to be accomplished each month or week before the next planning session. This eliminates procrastination and allows all tasks to be accomplished in a timely and competent manner.
Although many of my students are in my hometown of Vero Beach, Florida, I also help students who live in other towns and states. It is easy to have the initial consultation via phone (or FaceTime, or Skype, if you prefer). Follow-up planning sessions are always done by phone, even for local students as are essays which are sent to me as attachments to emails. I also do math tutoring via FaceTime or Skype as I have formatted PDF files that I can send to students before each tutoring session.
Coaching for College Interviews
Many colleges strongly recommend that students have an individual interview. Having served on the interview committee for Duke University for over twenty years, I am very familiar with the questions which will be asked. We can have a mock interview during which I can coach the student on the best responses to the questions.
Reams College Consulting prices range from $300-2000 depending on the numbers of services contracted for the college admissions process.
